    Garry Doucette, AACI, P. App

Garry has lived in the town of Port Alberni on the west coast of Vancouver Island since birth.  After graduation from high school, Garry tried a number of occupations before finally settling on the real estate industry. Some of these occupations included Carpenter, Dry Cleaner, Bookkeeper, Tree Planter, Logger and Forest Fire Fighter.  Then, after completing a two-year technical program in Forest Resources Technology from Malaspina College, Garry worked as a Silviculture Technician and Forestry Engineer.  In 1987 he decided to take a 180-degree turn and attained his Real Estate Salesman’s license.  For the next four years Garry enjoyed success as a Realtor while achieving recognition for sales volume in the Alberni Valley.  During this time, Garry continued to pursue his studies and was awarded an Agent’s License 9.15 under the Real Estate Act of BC.  At the peak of his success as a Realtor, Doug Heatley (formerly of Doug Heatley Appraisals) asked Garry if he would be interested in the appraisal business.  With Garry just starting a young family, the work hours of an appraiser were much more appealing.

Garry began his career as a real estate appraiser in October 1991 and received his CRA designation from the Appraisal Institute of Canada in July 1993.  Articling for the use of the AACI Designation commenced in August, 1995 under the supervision of Mr. David J. Clark, AACI, P. App. of Duncan, BC.

He considers himself very fortunate to have experienced a wide range of assignments in his practice as a fee appraiser and full partner with Pacific Coastal Appraisal Group Inc. (now PCAG Property Advisors Inc.). In addition to the appraisal of thousands of residential properties, he’s been involved with valuations that fall into the following broad categories:

    · residential apartment buildings,
    · commercial, multi-family and industrial vacant land,
    · commercial buildings,
    · industrial warehouses,
    · hotels and motels,
    · sub-dividable land,
    · water lots,
    · and manufactured home parks.

With types of assignments that fall into the following categories:

    · market value appraisal reports,
    · rental value reports,
    · new construction appraisals,
    · insurance replacement cost estimates,
    · trade proposal evaluations (consulting).

Besides better hours, the initial attraction for Garry to the appraisal profession was computers and information technology.  For the past 10 years Garry has been a beta tester for Alamode Inc.’s WinTotal appraisal software, which he finds both challenging and very interesting.

In 2001 Garry spearheaded an effort to have the Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC) establish a Residential Forms Committee that would create, review and revise residential appraisal forms for the Appraisal Institute of Canada's membership across Canada.  With some help from the Nanaimo Chapter, among others, the AIC established a Residential Forms sub-committee of the Standards Board.  Since then Garry has served as co-chair on that committee and was actively involved in the revision of the 2001 Canadian Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (CUSPAP) compliant forms. Then in 2004 the Appraisal Institute of Canada published the committee's new forms that are still in use by residential appraisers across Canada today.

For fun and stress relief, Garry trains and teaches martial arts.  Married with two daughters, Garry continues to enjoy his fee appraisal practice serving the Alberni Valley and the west coast of Vancouver Island.
